Barbados Highlights
Step aboard your air-conditioned coach and enjoy a few of Barbados's highlights. You tour will start by heading north along Barbados's "platinum coast" where some of Barbados's best restaurants & hotels can be seen along with the homes of the rich & famous. Your first stop will be St. James Parish Church located just north of Holetown, where the first settlers landed in 1627. The first wooden structure was replaced by a stone building in the late 1600s that was destroyed in the 1780 hurricane. Most of the present church was built during the 1800s and it has seen much restoration work over the years. The church contains many historic artifacts, including the baptismal font from 1684 and the original church bell, which pre-dates the United States Liberty Bell by more than 50 years!
On departing St. James Parish Church you will continue inland through swaying cane fields and picturesque villages to Orchid World.
Orchid World sits on 6 acres of land, some 800 feet above sea level in the central parish of St. George. A meandering path winds its way between beautiful outcrops of coral, rock gardens, cool shady gullies and ponds. Hummingbirds and the soothing sound of running water add to the natural beauty of the natural terrain. The Orchids themselves are quite spectacular; thousands are grown in shaded houses and outside on freestanding palisades. Many visitors are fascinated by the sight of orchid plants growing in mid-air with their roots completely free of any soil! Wonderful photo opportunities abound for the professional and amateur photographer.
Shuttle Bus to Malibu Beach
We will transfer you a short distance from the ship to the Malibu Beach Distillery & Visitors Centre.
Here you can lie on the lovely Malibu Beach where you will be provided with a bed and shared umbrella whilst sipping a complimentary Malibu cocktail. Guests may have full use of the beach facillities - showers & lockers etc.
You will also have the chance to take an optional tour of the Malibu distillery which is included in the price.
A great day out for everybody
Barbados Coast to Coast
Pass by sights such as Heroes Square (formerly Trafalgar Square) and Gun Hill Signal Station as you head towards the rugged Atlantic coastline.Travel inland up to the Highland Centre where you'll have spectacular views and be served with refreshments of Rum Punch or soft drinks. You'll see Thomas Church and pass through Holetown for a photo stop at the monument to commemorate where the first settlers landed in 1627. Enjoy viewing the opulent Sandy Lane area before returning to the ship in Bridgetown.
There is little walking on this tour and it is, therefore, considered suitable for passengers with walking difficulties.
Kensington Legends Cricket Tour
Take a guided tour of the famous Kensington Oval, a venue steeped in history and home of West Indies cricket, where such legends as Sir Garfield Sobers, Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes, Malcom Marshall and Joel Garner played some of their finest games
It hosted the first England touring side (1895), the first combined West Indies side (against MCC in 1911) and was the scene of West Indies' first Test in 1930. It also hosted the World Cup semis and the final in April 2007.
Have a seat in the media center and enjoy a short video on the history of the Oval and some of the famous players before touring the ground itself.
Then it's off to the brand new Legends Museum for a browse before enjoying tea and pastries with a Barbadian & West Indian cricket legend - could be one of those gents as mentioned before - share some cricket tales, get autographs and pose for photographs.
Concorde & Island Drive
An exciting opportunity to visit the Concorde Museum & Exhibit as the highlight of this Island Drive. Experience what it must have been like to fly on this aircraft as well as learning some of the history of the flight development and how Concorde differed from other aircraft.
You will have the chance to visit the museum, watch a short film and then actually climb aboard Concorde and sit in the original leather seats and peek into the cockpit so as to really feel for what it was like to be a passenger on this wonderful aircraft. Sit in a replica of the VIPdeparture lounge and use the Concorde simulators to fly the aircraft.
Due to the amount of steps involved in climbing up to board the aircraft this tour is not suitable for those who cannot easily climb up or down steep stairs.
Also included in this excursion is an Island drive taking in the Gothic Church of St John's which was erected in 1836. This building stands on a cliff 800ft above sea level with spectacular views of the East & South coasts of Barbados.
Harrisons Cave
Harrison's Cave is a magnificent natural phenomenon, quite in a class of its own. Formed from a particularly beautiful type of crystallized limestone, this stunning cavern is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular natural attractions in the entire Caribbean.
Though created over the course of hundreds of thousands of years, Harrison's Cave has only been open to the public since 1981. The first recorded history of Harrison's Cave dates back to 1796, but it then lay undisturbed until it was rediscovered in 1970 by Ole Sorenson and developed by the Government of Barbados
After checking in at the Visitors Center, you board the electric tram that will take you down into the cave and you are on your way to a memorable experience - magnificent chambers, incredible stalactites and stalagmites, bubbling streams, tumbling cascades, plunging waterfalls and emerald pools. Throughout the almost mile long cave the flowstone covered walls glisten in the lights as the calcite laden waters drip down from the roof.
In many areas the stalactites have reached down to join with a stalagmite and form spectacular pillars. At various points the tram stops to allow passengers to disembark and have a closer look at the beauty at hand. One stop takes place at the lowest point in the cave, where a waterfall plunges into an emerald pool. Video and flash photography are permitted.
